THE EMPLOYER AND THE EMPLOYEE

Employers and employees have significant responsibilities.  Believe it or not, both have roles that are just as important to each other.  It can be symbiotic.  The employer gives vision and direction and the employee provides the support and labor to make the vision happen.  If both sides don’t do their part then the organization fails.

As the employer you should be leading your employees with fairness, impartiality, and knowing that your work is considered a work from the Lord.  Biblically speaking, a good leader is also a good servant.  The Leader will not dictate or be a person who holds authority over their employees.  Jesus has said that leaders should not hold their authority over those they have been appointed over.

Several traits for leaders are important.  They are simple traits for every leader, but they are very important. Being a Leader brings responsibilities.  Do you remember the line from the original Spiderman movie with Tobey Maguire when his Uncle Ben told Peter “With great power comes great responsibility”?  Colossians 4:1 (ESV) state “Masters, treat your bondservants justly and fairly, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven.”  Employers, bosses, leaders, managers, and supervisors need to treat their employees with fairness.  The same standard you hold one of your employees to must be the same standard you hold all your employees.  And it also must be the same standard you hold yourself to as well.  In fact, as a leader you need to hold yourself higher and a little stricter so that the people you lead do not find fault in you or your actions.  Too many times have I seen a leader hold someone to a standard they are not willing to follow themselves.  If you don’t tolerate tardiness, then make sure you show up early.  If you don’t tolerate foul language, make sure your language is free of profanity.  And if you don’t tolerate being interrupted while you speak, make sure you don’t interrupt others and you maintain the same standard across all your employees.

One of the main problems I have seen during my time in the job market was the leader showing partiality to others, or showing favoritism.  This is a morale killer.  Especially when a leader or manager shows favoritism to an employee who is not performing to the accepted expectations or one who is performing a certain behavior yet does not tolerate the same behavior in another employee.  When confronted they even comment “That is their behavior” or “That is that person’s personality.”  James 2:9 (ESV) states “But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.”  It permits the other person to continue acting that way and destroys the credibility of the leader.  Furthermore, that person may move departments or change positions and if the behavior is not tolerated by the next leader or manager, that person is then set up for failure.  A leader needs to have credibility, showing favoritism destroys the leader’s credibility.

In the same way, an employee also needs to portray themselves in a good light.  Colossians 3:17 (NIV) states the following “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”  As an employee, I am working for the manager appointed over me as if he or she were placed in that position by God because ultimately, they are.  Any project assigned to me should be performed with the best attitude and to the best of my abilities and be able to produce the best results.

Do the work assigned to you and do it well.  Even if it is unfairly assigned to you by a harsh employer, ultimately you will be recognized.  Maybe not by your boss, but definitely by God if you treat your job as a ministry in itself.   1 Peter 2:19 – 20 (ESV) puts it this way “Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust. 19 For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. 20 For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God.”  Employees have the responsibility to carry out the work given to them.  They are placed in the position to perform the job they are given.  Unfortunately, I have been given those jobs I did not like, but I tried to do my best in those jobs.  I even tried to have fun doing those jobs, and in turn, it starts to be fun.  Paul tells Titus in Titus 2: 9 – 10 (ESV) “Bondservants are to be submissive to their masters in everything; they are to be well-pleasing, not argumentative, not pilfering, but showing all good faith, so that in everything they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior.”  I know it can be difficult to not argue or talk back to a Leader who is difficult to work with, as God’s people we must be of good attitude and show positive influence in our jobs.  Only when it is contrary to God’s word and God’s commandments can we disobey.  We should never compromise our Christianity and our relationship with God.

If you are lucky enough to work for a Leader who is also a Christian, a Believer in Jesus, then we are to be grateful and show respect to them even more.  1 Timothy 6: 2 – 3 gives us the following instruction “Those who have believing masters must not be disrespectful on the ground that they are brothers; rather they must serve all the better since those who benefit by their good service are believers and beloved.”  Be glad to have a boss who is a believer because they can understand us as well.   Don’t take advantage of them, as I have seen some Christians do this to their Christian managers.  Whether your Leader is a Christian or not treat them with respect, submit to their authority, do the job assigned excellently, ask for help when you need it, and don’t argue or complain.  If you have frustration or get to a point where you feel upset or emotionally tired, reach out to them for help.  I am sure they will give you help and provide support when you need it.

Finally, I want to leave this final thought from Ephesians 6 which speaks to both Employees (Bondservants) and Leaders (Masters).  Ephesians 6:5-9 states “Bondservants, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ,  not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man,  knowing that whatever good anyone does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether he is a bondservant or is free.  Masters, do the same to them, and stop your threatening, knowing that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven and that there is no partiality with him.”

Both Employees and Leaders have their responsibilities and must perform them to the best of their abilities as God has called all of us to do.  All of us must be the best representatives of God to those around us.  It is our actions that define us, not our words.  And if we talk of our faith in Christ, we must also demonstrate ourselves to be Christians and do our work giving our best efforts.  As leaders, we must be respectful, fair, honest, full of integrity, and impartiality.  Employees must give their best work, not be argumentative or talk back, obey their leaders even when they are not watching us, and do their best in our labor.  In doing so we are pleasing our God in Heaven and are demonstrating Christian values to those around us, those who are watching us and who are learning how Christians demonstrate our faith.

If any of this has touched your heart and you want to have a relationship with Our Father and Our Lord Jesus Christ, and you want to spend eternity in Heaven and Accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior, or you feel you have backslidden and want to repent then please pray this prayer:

DEAR LORD, I KNOW I AM A SINNER.  I KNOW I HAVE HOPE IN JESUS.  I WANT TO REPENT OF MY SINS AND COME TO YOU TO ASK FORGIVENESS.  I WANT TO ASK YOU TO FORGIVE MY SINS, CLEANSE ME OF MY SINS, GIVE ME THE HOPE OF ETERNAL LIFE WITH JESUS, AND I WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE JESUS IS MY LORD AND SAVIOR AND HE GAVE HIS LIFE FOR ME.  I ASK THE HOLY SPIRIT TO COME INTO ME AS THE GUARANTEE OF MY SALVATION AND WANT TO REPENT OF MY SINS.  ALL THIS I ASK IN JESUS HOLY AND PRECIOUS NAME, AMEN

If you prayed that prayer then I want to say CONGRATULATIONS AND WELCOME TO THE FAMILY OF BELIEVERS.  The Angels, The Saints, The Lord Jesus, and all who have gone before us are having a party in Heaven because you chose Jesus.  And I want to welcome you to the family.  Find a good Bible-based church and continue to learn about Jesus.  We are all on this Journey together.  And in the end we will hear God say “Well Done my good and faithful servant!”

FEELING LONELY

How many of us have felt like we were the only person in the room, inside a room full of people?  Or felt like we were alone even though there were a lot of people around us?  I think more people struggle with loneliness than would like to admit it.

The Word of God tells us that we are truly never alone.  Isaiah 41:10 tells us that God is always with us.  Here is how Isaiah puts it in the New American Standard Bible “‘Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’”  He will always give us strength when we need it, and God will always hold us up when we have lost our drive and our strength.

In the latter part of Hebrews 13:5 in the Modern English Version (MEV) of the Bible Paul quotes a verse of scripture from Deuteronomy 31:8 as a promise to us.  This verse of scripture was also quoted in Joshua 1:5 and it is a promise given to all of God’s children.  The passage is as follows: “I will never leave you, nor forsake you.”  God promises to always be with us even when we don’t think He is there.  He is always with us and watching over us.  He never leaves us.

Don’t get me wrong, I feel lonely at times and struggle to remember these passages and the promises that He is always with His children.  For those who accepted Jesus as our Savior, He is always with us in the form of the Holy Spirit.

John 14: 15 – 16 (MEV) Jesus told His disciples that He would send the counselor to be with us.  His own words said that the counselor would never leave us and be with us forever.  “I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Counselor, that He may be with you forever:  the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, for it does not see Him, neither does it know Him. But you know Him, for He lives with you, and will be in you.”  We always have a companion with us – God in the form of the Holy Spirit. We always have God with us, living inside of us.  We are never alone.

The truth is with all these promises from God how can we say we are alone?  God is truly with us and is always for us.  In the New Living Translation of Matthew 28 at the end of verse 20 Jesus tells us “And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”   That is a great promise for us.

Jesus even demonstrated to us how God was with Him.  John 16:32 (NASB) records Jesus saying “yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.”  Jesus was the example of God’s love for us.  God loved Jesus because Jesus is the Son of God.  As Christians, we are children of God, and he gave us the promise of the Holy Spirit once we accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior.  As soon as we were saved, He sealed us with the promise and the gift of salvation and the Holy Spirit.  The Holy Spirit lives in us and never leaves us.

This brings us back to Deuteronomy 31: 8 “The Lord, He goes before you. He will be with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you. Do not fear, nor be dismayed.”  We will always have the Lord with us, and we are never alone.  If you ever feel alone, and this is for me as well, it is a lie from satan (I purposely write his name in lowercase because satan is a nothing burger).  God is the All-Powerful All Sovereign God.  And He loves you so much that He wants to be with you and stay with you.  He lives in you thru the Holy Spirit and will not leave you alone…even at your loneliest.  Please remember that.

If any of this has touched your heart and you want to have a relationship with Our Father and Our Lord Jesus Christ, and you want to spend eternity in Heaven and Accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior, or you feel you have backslidden and want to repent then please pray this prayer:

ABOUT FORGIVENESS

I am mad at my friend.  They really upset me, and I am going to take action.  I am mixing up a lot of different poisons and when I am done the concoction will all taste like grape juice.  But I will show them.  They will finally know how much they upset me because I am going to make sure they know I drank all the poison and they will really suffer as the poison really tears them up.  Doesn’t make sense…right?  But that is how unforgiveness works.  It does not affect the other person, it affects you.  You mix the poison, you drink the poison, and hope the other person is affected.  That is unforgiveness.

Unforgiveness tends to burn a hole in your own soul.  Chances are that the person you are mad at does not know what they did to upset you.  And if they do, they may not know to the extent it affected you.  That is why forgiveness is especially important.

Forgiveness is a sign of strength and not a sign of weakness.  It shows that you can overcome the hurt you have and can release the other person from the debt you feel you are owed.  Even while on the cross Jesus asked God to forgive the people who had placed them there as written in Luke 23:34 “Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”  Jesus was showing love for His creation by asking God to forgive those who sinned against him.  Jesus did this while He was being crucified after being tortured all night and day before carrying His cross to the mountain of Golgotha and after being nailed to a cross.

In showing love forgiveness also allows you to show mercy and to release others from the debt that you feel is owed.  Forgiveness cancels out that debt.  In the Beatitudes, Jesus even goes a step further about forgiveness and how to deal with those who hurt you.  Matthew 5:43- 46 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’  But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.  For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?”  At the time of Jesus, the Tax Collectors were considered the outcast of society since many were corrupt and often charged more than was to be collected.  They would line their pockets by overcharging on taxes.  To compare a person to a Tax Collector was the same as comparing someone who is considered the lowest of the lows in ethics.

By loving your enemy it shows strength, that you can overcome even the hurt to give them an out.  I know it is difficult because I have been there.  Imagine having a neighbor who insults you every day and every moment they see you, to the point that they chase you down with their car.  I wish I were embellishing, but I am not.  A neighbor who is a Christian told me the best words that I hear to this day – almost 10 years later “You need to pray for your enemies!”  I prayed every night and gave it to God.  I still pray that one day that person will know Jesus.  It was difficult at the time, but the statement still rings true.  And the best example still goes back to Jesus praying for His persecutors while He was hanging from a cross.

Proverbs 20: 21 – 22 says: “If our enemy is hungry, give him food to eat;
And if he is thirsty, give him water to drink;
For you will heap burning coals on his head,
And the Lord will reward you.”

Please do not mistake it for a monetary reward.  Know that you will be blessed by God for forgiving others.

The most important reason to forgive others is summed up in Mark 6: 14- 15 “For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.”  We need to forgive for our own sins to be forgiven.  Jesus went as far as to tell Peter that we need to continuously forgive.  The conversation is documented in the following manner in Matthew 18:21-22: “Then Peter came and said to Him, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?”  Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.”  This does not mean to forgive 490 times or have a countdown, it means to forgive as often as they ask.

A Pastor I respect told me once that forgiveness is a continuing process.  We need to forgive because Jesus forgave us when we asked for His forgiveness.  Forgiveness is not a sign of weakness but a sign of strength.  It does not say you have power over me, it says you do not have power over me because My God is greater.

Forgiveness should also not be confused with allowing someone to walk all over you or take advantage of you.  If a person continuously sins against you, let us take the example of abuse, it means that you forgive that person and release them from the debt.  It also means that they have no power over you.  At the same time, you can build a healthy boundary that they will not abuse you ever again as well, especially when it is continuous abuse – whether physical, mental, emotional, or sexual abuse.  It also means that they have destroyed the trust and are not allowed to abuse you again or hurt you again.  You can build a Healthy Boundary to not allow the action to occur.  But if you forgive them and release them from the debt, then you can begin the healing process.

I will leave you with these final words from Jesus in Mark 11: 25 – 26 “Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father who is in heaven will also forgive you your transgressions.  But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father who is in heaven forgive your transgressions.”  Forgive those who have hurt you, release them from the debt, and watch as your healing begins.  Believe me, when I say it will be a better world for you and your heart will be lighter.
